Wayfinding solution for Austria's largest medieval fortress welcoming 1.2 million annual visitors. Historical design concept inspired by defensive architecture enhances visitor experience through strategic flow analysis.

Hohensalzburg Fortress in Salzburg has a fascinating history dating back to 1077. One of the largest medieval castles in Europe, it has undergone extensive restoration and renovation and now welcomes around 1.2 million visitors a year. Working with Berlin-based agency s.t.a.t.e, the signage system for this unique historic fortress in Austria was developed. To enhance the visitor experience, s.t.a.t.e developed a cohesive design concept inspired by the fortress's defensive features. As part of this process, visitor flows were analyzed and new ticket pricing structures were introduced.

The resulting concept formed the basis for the new signage system, which was implemented throughout the site in multiple languages. This holistic approach ensures that every visitor can fully experience the rich history and awe-inspiring grandeur of this extraordinary landmark. In addition, engaging educational programmes and interactive exhibitions are provided that deepen the understanding of the fortress' historical significance. By creating a more immersive experience, a lasting connection between guests and this iconic site is fostered.
